The “Scalping” Action

The scalper unit is positioned at the front of the harvester. The gearbox drives the rotating knives or flails that remove the beet foliage (crown) immediately before lifting. Precision here is critical: too deep, and you lose yield; too shallow, and you increase green matter content, leading to penalties at the sugar factory.

Oscillating Lifters

For the lifting shares (Polder shares), the gearbox converts rotational motion into an oscillating “shaking” movement. This vibration fluidizes the soil around the beet root, reducing the extraction force needed by up to 40%. Our gearboxes are tuned to maintain this frequency even under heavy soil damping loads.

The Mud Barrier

Operating inches from the ground, the gearbox is constantly sprayed with a slurry of wet soil and stones. Our specialized housing eliminates “dirt traps” and features a sealed breather system that prevents pressure differentials from sucking moist air (and contaminants) into the gear oil during cooling cycles.

Terrain-Specific Calibration

• Netherlands (Flevoland Polders): The “Kleigrond” (Heavy Clay) requires high torque at low speeds. We recommend our 1:1.92 ratio to maintain lifting torque without stalling the hydraulic motors on self-propelled harvesters like the Vervaet Beet Eater.
• UK (East Anglia / Lincolnshire): Flint and stone content here is high. We supply gearboxes with reinforced 20CrMnTiH gears and shock-absorbing ductile iron housings to withstand the impact of hidden stones typical in the “Fenlands”.

Problem klienta: “Every November, the seals on our scalper units would blow out. The wet clay wraps around the shaft and pushes the seal in. We were losing gear oil into the field, which is an environmental violation.”
