Bevel Gear Drive Principle

The HC-BGB9 operates on a straight or spiral bevel gear principle to redirect and adjust the rotational speed from the tractor PTO at 90 degrees to the cutting blade shaft below the mower deck. Incoming torque at 540 rpm passes through the input shaft into a hardened bevel pinion, which meshes with the crown wheel at the selected ratio. The resulting output speed drives the blade spindle at the optimal RPM for clean, efficient cutting across a range of grass and vegetation conditions. Oil bath lubrication ensures heat is continuously managed at the gear mesh interface, significantly extending bearing and gear life under sustained operation.

Material & Construction

Housings are manufactured from high-grade ductile cast iron, providing excellent rigidity while absorbing vibration loads from the cutting deck. All internal gear sets are produced from 20CrMnTi alloy steel, carburised and case-hardened to 58-62 HRC at the tooth surface whilst retaining a tough core. Input and output shafts are precision-machined from 42CrMo4 steel, heat-treated to provide fatigue resistance under cyclic torque loading. Sealed high-capacity ball and taper roller bearings are used at all shaft journals. The input seal is a double-lip rotary type rated for outdoor exposure, and the housing breather valve prevents pressure build-up during extended mowing runs.

Where HC-BGB9 Is Used

In the UK, this lawn mower gearbox is most commonly specified for trailed and mounted rotary mowers on farm headlands and rough grassland, golf course rough and fairway perimeters, local authority amenity grassland cutting, National Trust and heritage estate groundscare, and roadside verge management contractors working under council frameworks. The compact envelope and standard PTO interface also make the HC-BGB9 a practical replacement gearbox for worn units on Twose, McConnel, Maschio, and Tonutti mowers where the OEM unit has reached the end of its service life.
